| Mr. C. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} B. De. Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} HFG. E/HDY.{William Hardy}2/HP.24.4.37. Phantom III Rear Axle. We send herewith N.Sch.5123 showing modified lubrication for the pinion thrust bearing on the lines of N.Sch.5099 recently issued for the Bentley. The screw thread has been retained as our experience with the leather oil seals of the Perfect seal type has not been altogether satisfactory. The screw thread should have only one start for greater efficiency and reduced cost. The adjustment washer for the thrust race is to be either of case hardened steel or of bronze. We understand that tests are being made to determine which material is better for manufacture. The cored groove at present provided at the bottom of the casing for the escape of oil must be deleted. The grooves in the bearing race can be deleted at the first convenient opportunity. E/HDY.{William Hardy} | ||
