2nd July, 1938.

Messrs. Rolls Royce Ltd.,
DERBY.

Dear Sirs,

We beg to thank you for your letter of the 28th ult., confirming the visit of your Mr. Matthews to our Works.

We have pleasure in advising you that we have already arranged with Messrs. Wellworthy to supply centre main bearings for one of our 4-cylinder petrol engines. An initial delivery of castings were obtained yesterday, and we hope to have these under test on Wednesday of next week.

We would, however, like to point out that the hardness of our standard flame hardened crankshaft is more in the region of 500/550 than 550/600. This hardness is the same as that obtained with our Diesel crankshaft, where we are using the same grade of chrome-molybdenum steel, and from the wear figures which we have already obtained we think that there is every prospect of our obtaining quite a good performance.

We note that we shall now be obtaining deliveries of bearings in your A.C.9 alloy, and we should be glad to know if you would care to let us have the specification of this material so that we can make periodical checks in order to see that our suppliers are keeping material up to your specification.

We would like to thank you for the information which you have given us regarding oil filtration. We will certainly communicate with both Messrs. British Filters and A.C. Sphinx regarding their bypass type of filters, but we would like to point out that the majority of commercial vehicle operators have a decided objection to filters of the 'throw-away' type. We have for some 12 years been incorporating felt type filters in all our engines, and even with this type, where the filter unit can be cleaned occasionally, we find that users object to the cost of the replacement. With this in view we are endeavouring to use a Lolos type Autoklean unit, and rotate it at approximately five times
