B-67-AE. Mr. Geoffrey Smith.

With reference to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}3/T. 2.6.34.

(1) We have found that the synchromesh mechanism is the main cause of the noise when a car is starting from rest. This noise gives the impression that the clutch is bad, whereas the same operation performed in silence would probably excite no comment. We think it should be possible to overcome the trouble without a major alteration to the gearbox. The Bentley clutch itself is of course receiving first priority in our experiments.

(2) As E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} points out the new float chamber needles which are being supplied at the same time as the fire prevention drainage scheme should overcome the trouble. S.U's admit that the needles they have already supplied are unsatisfactory.
