To Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} re B-67-AE Mr Geoffrey Smith. Replying to your memo Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}3/T.2.6.34, I think we must accept that with the lighter flywheel fitted to the Bentley, it is necessary to rev rather more if starting off in second gear to avoid clutch judder. Personally I favour using the first gear as the engine revs so freely it is possible to reach a useful speed on this gear and then slip in third and from thence to top. With regard to the second point mentioned, namely, the carburetter flooding, the Bentley needle has the guide underneath the seating and is inclined to collect grit and jam. The new needles supplied with the fresh float chamber lids that are being fitted with the drainage scheme will definitely have more clearance, and this should cure the defect.
