R.R. 279 (50 M) (X 340) 23.2.12. E.P. 1956. ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED, NIGHTINGALE ROAD, DERBY. TELEGRAMS: "ROYCAR," DERBY. TELEPHONES: 813 (TWO LINES). DEPARTMENTAL MEMO. This column is for Name of Person addressed. Date. Mr Barrington. 11/4/12 STAMP: RECEIVED 12 APR 1912 RE WORM AXLE. The worm axle has so far proved to be unsatisfactory to such an extent that I cannot recommend it for use on our cars, the chief faults are as follows :- 1. There is a bad vibration on the retard drive, this vibration which I have proved comes from the axle is transmitted through the whole chassis. The vibration is a continuous one as long as the axle is driving on retard, and is felt worst on the torque tube and appears to be a tortional vibration. The removal of the brake drum does not cure it, but appears to allow the irregular turning of the shaft to continue as far as the flywheel instead of being stopped at the brake drum. Contd.
