The copper cylinder would then be driven at a suitable speed long enough to thoroughly burnish the working surfaces of the brushes, subsequently to the operation of grinding these to the correct radius. They stated that brushes burnished in this way did not give any trouble in use, and that they had overcome any tendency for the contact surface of the brushes and the commutator to become bad, owing to some slight initial irregularity. We propose to try out this idea. We have always noticed that the half hour period of light running on 6 volts which we specified for production motors previous to being put on the load test, considerably improves the running qualities of the brushes.
