To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} V8430 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}3/LG3. 2. 28. SHORTENED NUT ON PHANTOM STEERING TO GIVE CLEARANCE ON FULL LOCK. X8430 We have now run one of these shortened nuts a considerable distance (alteration to BY/HEB{H. Biraben}10/M28.12.27) experimentally. We also have one in France on the Continental Phantom running 10,000 miles. We consider that as a result of our tests, we can recommend that a number of such shortened nuts should be put through production and if no further trouble is encountered by Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer}, we will immediately standardise the modification.
