1163? Experimental Dept. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale}10/MH.{M. Huckerby} 12th. July, 1939. The Cambridge Instrument Co. Ltd., CAMBRIDGE. Dear Sirs, Mr. Montague Tombs of the "Autocar" is visiting these Works one day next week, either Wednesday or Thursday, 19th. or 20th. He is interested in ways and means of measuring accurately the acceleration of cars for the "Autocar" road tests. We told Mr. Tombs that we have used your "Chronograph" and a fifth wheel on cars for doing this job and will show him what we have done. We think that the very best way of making this measurement is to use a recording accelerometer and time marker, and an integraph which will turn the record into a velocity-time or a space-time chart. The same apparatus can be used for braking distances, Dunlops use this method. We thought perhaps that you would be willing to come up here to demonstrate your apparatus to him. We do not know whether you make the "integraph" or if Dunlop's apparatus is of German manufacture. We rather feel that without an integraph your apparatus is useless as the labour involved in the conversion is colossal. Perhaps you will say if you can send the apparatus up here, with a demonstrator, and we will let you know the exact date as soon as it is fixed. Incidentally, we are hoping for a grant of money to enable us to buy this apparatus for ourselves, so that the journey is probably worth while. Mr. Tombs will be interested in the prices of this apparatus. Yours faithfully, for ROLLS-ROYCE LTD. | ||
