RC{R. Childs}421 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wst.5/MA. 17th September, 1934. Messrs.S.Smith & Sons Ltd., Cricklewood Works, London, N.W.2. Electric Petrol Gauges. Dear Sir, We have observed that a common fault with our petrol gauges is the inability of the float to immediately accommodate itself to different levels. This is particularly noticeable when filling up an empty tank. The gauge will refuse to read correctly until the petrol has been swirled about in the tank such as occasioned by rocking the car etc. We suggest it is important that you provide more buoyancy to the tank unit by increasing the size of the float. This will make the operation of the tank unit more responsive to varying petrol levels in the tank. Will you please put in hand for us an experimental tank unit suitable for the Bentley tank with a larger float also with the improved aero design of gear assembly and with the warning light contacts incorporated as per the sample recently received from you for test. It may be necessary for us to make some provision on our tank for the installation of this larger float tank unit, the existing hole not perhaps being large enough for the insertion of the unit. Perhaps you will also investigate this point and if any alteration is required, send us a drawing of the new unit for our guidance. | ||
