Silent Tappets on the Phantom.

We realise that there were good reasons for not introducing these on the Phantom. We would however like to emphasize again that it would be a considerable relief to us if they could have gone on to production in small quantities on the Phantom.

On the SpectreCodename for Phantom III we shall have twice as many tappets as on the Phantom and we shall be committed to the hydraulic operation. Therefore if we run into serious trouble on production we shall be in a very unhappy position.

From our experience experimentally, the manufacture of these hydraulic tappets is one of the most awkward jobs we have so far come across on car work; the patterns and dies used for manufacturing the experimental parts are of course in existence.

Apart from the experimental side of the job, both Bellringer and Maddocks have been making requests to us for improvement in the silence of the Phantom valve gear, and we have to agree with them that reverting to the old camshaft without adopting the silent tappets will not overcome their troubles.
