20 HP. UNDERSHIELD.

Referring to R1O/M.10.6.26. of which you have received a copy, the original N.Scheme to which we worked, namely, N.Scheme 1939, shows the levers only 1.850", but in Dal/M.9.6.25. you instructed us to increase this dimension to 2.150". This would make a difference of .300" in the length of the lever, and this possibly covers the amount by which the undershield has been lowered to accomodate the levers in question.

Apparently the increase in length specified in Dal/M.{Mr Moon / Mr Moore} 9.6.25. for the lever in question was found necessary in connection with leverage or balancing out, and therefore it will be necessary for the equalising gear to be raised as a unit. We want to know how you propose to carry out this modification.

The .300 referred to does not represent anything like the maximum gain that can be made, and apparently R.{Sir Henry Royce} is intending to take full advantage of the possible saving of ground clearance, so far as the undershield is concerned, by pushing same up until it touches the flywheel casing, and even adding a flat on the flywheel casing itself to enable adequate clearance to be obtained between the two.

So far as I can trace matters, we are not responsible for this point in design, although R.{Sir Henry Royce} ear-marks us for it.
