Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}14/D2.1.30 Re: Motor Car Insurance - Private Mileage Use. Replying to D1/T31.12.29, it is quite clear with the circular letter referred to we only intended to cover private mileage use. The use of experimental cars, referred to in the fourth paragraph of your memo., does not come within the scope of private mileage use, and there-fore, the instructions do not apply to such usage. There is, however, a point which I think Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} might like to mention to the privileged members of the staff referred to, and that is, that if, during their private privileged use of a Company's car for pleasure purposes, they were to have an accident out of which a Third Party claim arose, the Company would have to pay the cost by reason of the fact that the Company carries its own insurance. Quite voluntarily, under these circumstances, they may wish to cover themselves against the possibility of such an eventuality. All I have in mind on this point is that from the official's own point of view he might infinitely prefer covering the risk rather than running it, especially when we know that a Third Party claim can easily run into thousands of pounds.
