Re. Motorcar Insurance - Private Mileage Use. TO: SK. D1/T31.12.29. Referring to your circular letters S613/E18.12.29 and Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}1/MH{M. Huckerby}24.12.29, as I advised you in letter D2/DL27.12.29 both your memos have been circulated to certain members of the staff at Derby. It has been brought to my notice that the people to whom these circulars have been sent are unable to properly interpret what they are to do in the matter. The circular letters refer specifically to "Private Mileage Use." This is understood as referring to occasions when an employee hires a car from the Company and pays the Company so much per mile for its use. At Derby there is very little car hiring and most of this is done by the Welfare Committee to enable them to carry out their social and benevolent work. There is however, a considerable amount of running of experimental cars during week-ends and holidays by privileged members of the staff who use these cars for their particular private business and pleasure. On such occasions they go where they please and take whom they choose, either families or friends. The use of Exptl. Cars has been the custom from the earliest days of the Company, and it has always been considered wise and profitable to have these cars so run by certain officials whose opinions are valuable. The circular letters referred to do not touch on the risk taken in these cases, and we should be glad to receive your instructions as to whether such running of experimental cars should or should not have the same conditions applied.
