A small scoop was obtained from the Chris Craft depot which Mr. Cooper tested with a three foot length of pipe, this scoop would deliver water over a three foot head at approximately 12 M.P.H. the area of the scoop being slightly larger than that of the original one.

This scoop was fitted on the starboard side of the boat in a similar position to that of the original on the port side, the new scoop being connected direct to the exhaust system, the old connection from the oil cooler feed being blanked off.

SATURDAY 28.3.31.

A further examination was made of the cylinders for foreign matter. All O.K. except for rust on the liners, this rust was difficult to explain. Mineral oil was put into the cylinders and the engines turned by compressed air, the mineral oil was removed and a further inspection showed the cyl. barrels to be practically free from rust.

SUNDAY 29.3.31.

Mr. Cooper now decided to have the No.2 propeller fitted to assist getting up on the step quicker. The boat was again placed upon the slip-way, whereupon the No.2 prop. was fitted also the new scoop.

The first propeller was in a very bad condition, through rust, the metal being very badly eaten, giving the appearance of an acid effect on the steel. Several enquiries were made about the water which has a dirty brown colour, and the general opinion was that this water contained a certain amount of amonia.

MONDAY 30.3.31.

The new propeller and scoop having been fitted, the boat was taken back to the Chris Craft depot. Work continued on Tuesday and Wednesday fitting the new boxes as they came along; being again ready at 6-0 a.m. on Thursday morning, after being towed up to Parana, we found that another gunboat had been placed approximately five miles away, these gunboats acting as sighting points. The timing apparatus had been tested and found O.K. After the usual delay and muddle for nearly an hour Kaye Don with Silcocke and Garner set off on a third attempt.
