20 HP. SPRING LOADED CROSS STEERING TUBE. X5425

Since its inception, we have been in trouble with the spring loaded ball ends on the 20 HP. cross steering tube due to there being insufficient room to get a spring in to give the requisite load with a reasonable stress.

At the present moment, to get the 600 lbs. load we require, the springs are stressed up to 90,000 lbs. At this stress, on production, there are always a certain number of springs which have a tendency to take a permanent set.

Since we have fitted N.sch.2308 with springs of 600 lbs. rating, in order to reduce complaints of joggles, we find that with 600 lbs. load on the cross steering tube is the bare minimum if low speed wobbles are to be avoided.

We should be obliged if, now that R.{Sir Henry Royce} has approved of this device, you could give us more spring room on the cross steering tube.

We still have a solid ball joint at the front end of the 20 HP. side steering tube. This is a source of rattles when it wears. We should like to put a joint similar to those on the cross steering tube in this position.
