805 + 405 To Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} from Hm{Capt. W. Hallam - Head Repairs}/Std. c. By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/JB. c. HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} c. By/Cs. c. BY/Ald.{F. Allwood - Experimental Design} BONNETS - B.V. AND B.70. The latest mover type bonnet for B.V. (to FOD.888/931/932/933/934/900) has been detailed and two bonnets have been constructed and fitted to chassis, one to 8.M.V. and one to 9.B.V. The latter chassis has not yet returned from the coachbuilders and therefore we have not been able to inspect same - in the case of 8.B.V., however, the chassis is at the Works and will shortly commence Continental running. Unfortunately, this chassis has not the latest scuttle width, the dash and scuttle being 1.5" narrower than the up-to-date bodies, and this necessitated us using the existing orthodox bonnet top plates and modifying the turn up at the sides to come in line with the mover bonnet scheme. We have inspected the bonnet as completed and have the following criticisms to make. (1) An extra fixing clip is required on the bottom edge of the side plates, equidistant from front lower clip and present intermediate clip. (2) Three extra Ferodo pads, intermediate between the four fixing clips are desirable to stop possible knocks. (3) The holding down clip on to which the Delco Remy springs pull, need modification to facilitate the "clipping on" of these springs - see attached marked up print. (4) The holding down clips and springs mentioned in (2) are very inaccessible - this will be better with the wider standard scuttle but needs further improvement. We suggest that these clips are either moved to face of dash or if kept on side, they should be moved upwards as near the top edge of the side plate as possible. At present it is so difficult to get the springs on to the clips, that it is impossible to fit the springs so that a reasonably large securing load can be obtained. (5) Three opening springs are required on the bonnet hinge, spaced so that they do not foul the scuttle or the radiator top tank. | ||
