Mᶜ Leslie X7941 To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} From G.W.H. Hotel de France, Chateauroux, FRANCE. 5.7.32. 19-EX. As reported in our Daily Report of the 3rd inst, there was excessive movement of the N.S. spare wheel carrier, incidentally, the spare wheel has been fitted to this side chiefly. Upon examination, for the reason, we found that the heads of three bolts fastening the stiffening stays to the frame, had broken off. The remaining bolt, the nut was found loose. These are 5/16" bolts. The fracture looks to be due to fatigue. SERVO. The servo was not working smoothly due to the fabrics having spread, this caused a jamming of the plates on the drum. The action of the servo after burning off the spreaded portion of the fabrics, was normal. With regard to the ball bearing cams of the servo, I asked RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} to fit me a new set for this test, as the ones taken off, showed deep grooves in the cam faces, by the action of the ball. It was found that the brinell of the cams was on the low side. We took the opportunity of examining the new ones yesterday, and there is one that is showing a distinct groove similar to those taken off. It would seem that particular care must be taken on production to see that these faces are properly hardened. A note on the drawings for production would be beneficial. ------------- During this morning's run a very bad blow has developed from No.6 cylinder into the crankcase. So far we have taken the cylinder head off, and there is nothing as yet to show us the reason. We are therefore dismantling the bottom half and taking out the piston to find what is the cause. It may mean that we shall be held up for some time, if the fault is serious. | ||
