Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} [REDACTED] X4257 EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}/ThnB/H16.2.25. re. Squeaking Brakes. 20-HP Chassis. As you are aware, the only instructions which we have as yet been able to issue to the Depots in regard to the above is with reference to the insertion of powdered graphite. As you are also already aware neither the administration nor Mr. Royce are at all happy in regard to these instructions. We have not had definite instructions to cancel this information, but are anxious to issue them further instructions at the very earliest possible moment. We understood that you were in a position to issue instructions as to how to overcome squeaking brakes on 20-HP cars by bedding the brakes in a similar manner to that adopted in the front wheel brake system on the 40/50 HP. cars. We believe also there is a damping scheme for the brakes of the 20-HP cars going through experimentally with a view to overcoming this trouble. You promised us about a month ago to supply us with some information which we could furnish to the Depots as to how to deal with squeaking brakes on 20-HP cars. The object of this memo is to point out that we are still waiting for this information, as we are anxious to cancel the instructions re powdered graphite, but cannot do so until we have some other information to give them which will help them to deal with complaints of squeaking brakes on 20-HP cars.
