Dear Sirs,

We have now completed some tests on the rings supplied by you recently, and the results have not come up to our expectations on either road or bed test.

Examining the rings of the test bed engine we find that the 'L' section ring Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}471 is showing a full face bedding which of course should not be, the 'L' section ring should have a very narrow bedding on the lower edge. We do not know how you manufactured these rings but we should say that you finished ground the outside diameter after cutting out the section at the back of the ring, if this is so then there is an explanation why the ring is not functioning correctly. The correct procedure is to take a completed EW.1536 ring and then cut out the portion at the back of the ring to form the 'L' section, in which case the removing of the portion of metal to form this section is actually the last operation on the ring.

We should also like to raise another point, and this is that we find the free gap varies considerably, some rings being .460 and others as high as .570; is there any particular reason for this ?

We should also like you to supply the following rings -

72 EW.1536 in ordinary single cast material

72 EW.1536 in high phosphorus-molybdenum material,

and in addition to the above should you agree that the manufacture
