In order, however, to simplify the adaptation of this idea to existing cars, a scheme has been got out to Drawing S.CD.496, which avoids the necessity for setting up the trunnion in a lathe for machining the groove, and it is recommended that this modification be adopted when dealing with complaints of noisy thrust races on cars at Depots. We attach a Blue Print of S.CD.496, the procedure being as follows: (1) Before unscrewing the serrated retaining nut, it should be marked on the top centre so as to locate the position of the oil groove. (2) After unscrewing the nut, a hole .105 dia. should be drilled at an angle of approximately 30° just behind the shoulder, so as to break through about .050 inside the inner facing. (3) A groove in the thread should be added by means of a flat ended drill .156 dia. to a length of approximately .300 from the joint facing. (4) A similar groove to be added on the centre facing where the drill has broken through. In any subsequent dismantling and re-erecting it is important to see that the marks coincide, otherwise the oil grooves will be obscured. (continued | ||
