C.A.V. Type Regulator with 2 1/4 turns.

The 2 1/4-turn type of regulator was introduced as the result of our request, to the makers that the regulated output be increased to 18 amperes at 13.5 volts.

This was because it was considered, that a load on the system of 18 amperes was a probable one, and one which might easily be on for long periods during night running. Further, that it should be entirely supplied by the dynamo, and not contributed to by the battery.

It was found however, that the characteristic of these regulators was such that when adjusted to comply with our requirements at 13.5 volts, the regulated current at 15.5 volts (which corresponds to day-time running with the battery fully charged) was excessive, being as much as 13 or 14 amperes.

Some compromise was evidently necessary and we have agreed with the Makers on a setting which gives on the average in a warm condition, about 17 amperes at 13.5 volts and about 6.5 amperes at 15.5 volts. This setting is given as :-

Open circuit operating voltage (Cold)
15.8 to 16.3 volts.

Figures fixing the limits of performance variation on this basis have been supplied to which we also agree and with which all regulators of this type supplied to Production should comply.

Attached is a copy of the revised specification for Makers, No.E14/1., to which we shall periodically check production units.
