Re Double Rear Brakes. X.2
-----------------------

There has recently been a complaint from Sales Dept. about the foot brake of the double brakes being ineffective at slow speeds, due to the brakestaking some time before they take hold. The particular cars complained of have once been good in this respect, it seems that the only trouble can be that oil may have got on to the brake surface.
It should be pointed out that these foot brakes are ineffective at slow speeds if oily.
We have succeeded in spoiling the brakes on our experimentalcar as regards the pulling up at slow speeds by forcing three or four grease cups full of oil along the actuating shaft which carries the expanding cam. The oil when forced along this shaft has an outlet in the centre of the actuating cam with a view to lubricating this part. We find that the oil runs from this outlet and drops on to the brake drum, also that the oil comes out at the end of the bearing bush along the slot which is cut to allow the milling cutter clearance. The oil holes in the shaft about the centre of the bush are much too near to these clearance slots and could with great advantage be moved round, at present the oil has only to pass over about 1/16th bearing surface before it is quite free to drop on
