666. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/IMW.{Ivan M. Waller - Head of Chateauroux} from Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}5/R.15.7.39. 30 G.VII - SILVER PHANTOM. You have no more 7½" tyres in France for the "Silver Phantom". You have, however, 12 Avon tyres which you can use up. They can be fitted to the wheels you have until the 5" rims arrive. We shall be sending out some more 4-ply Rayon tyres. We have not been very fortunate with the steering parts for the Continental. We have no pivots with 1½° backward lean available, nor have we the yoke piece giving reduced out-of-centre point. We are, however, urging the parts and hope to have them ready in about a fortnight. In the meantime, we are removing the levers from 7.B., and will send these out in due course. We shall not send them out until we can see that the other levers are in sight, because when the fitter comes over we want him to be fully occupied, and not to have a break between the experiments. You will, therefore, have to do some miles on the 'Corniche' until the fitter arrives. We should be interested to know how you are driving the 'Silver Phantom'. We do not want the car nursed, but, on the other hand, it does not come quite in the Bentley category. I should be interested to know whether the brake wear is reasonable, and whether the 5 notches we had to take up all-round after our run was due to initial bedding settling down.
