X771 R.{Sir Henry Royce} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Bx. c to R.N. WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} N.V. RECEIVED H11/EA21.10.27. Laboratory. Re Yours R1/M20.10.27. We are getting promising results on the wire containing copper, under Exptl. Dept. Test. As previously noted, this wire has been in use for a considerable time in the past in a somewhat unsuitable condition from the heat-treatment point of view. Now we are giving it the correct heat-treatment with the expected advantages. Should we require a similar material, i.e. containing Copper, the steel manufacturers could easily supply it. On the other hand, if we revert to a steel of our normal specification, containing no copper, we could also get good results if careful control of the first quench refinement and the hardness of the finished spring were carried out by Rockwell test.
