(2) This second method should materially facilitate changing gear. English Daimler is one of this type, I think. The easiest method and the least trouble is to throw out the reverse pinion only, but the best move would be to have all gears out of gear when direct drive is in, or when no gear is in, i.e. car standing. Ball bearings, I understand give a certain amount of noise. We could try some R.B.F. type(races full of balls, no cages) which may be more silent. Panhards, I believe, used these.
