With reference to your note R6/D10312 concerning the noises caused by the side shaft running idle, I had some experience with this trouble at Napiers, and I thought perhaps you would be interested to know the following facts :-

The old 40 and 60 H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} type of gear box was of the system which you term the continental arrangement, having the side shaft in permanent engagement with the main drive to the propeller shaft, and we experienced a considerable amount of trouble owing to the noise which should have been expected from this arrangement. We were unable to overcome this noise and attempts were made to throw the pinion on the lay shaft out of gear by the striking mechanism, when the
