To Sr/VA. X1245 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}21/KW.5.3.36. Chassis B-118-BL. Mr. Paul Spengler. If you can get the oil consumption of Mr. Spengler's chassis to about 350 m.p.g. by dealing with the oil pressure, then Hall's metal big end bearings may raise it to a passable figure. If not, it is almost certain that you will have to re-bore and fit new pistons. We are sending you under separate cover a set of Hall's metal big end bearings. It does not matter whether you fit these in the drilled up rods or in the undrilled, either of which are satisfactory. We are very interested in this oil consumption from a technical point of view, and should like as much information as possible about this engine if you take the pistons out. For instance, is the oil consumption due to worn bores, or the holes in the oil scraper ring getting blocked up, or the ring losing its tension, or what ? It occurs to me that if you do not want to re-bore you might take off the bottom half and in conjunction with the close clearance big ends, try the improved scraper rings which we send you along with the bearings.
