x1245 W/P - Sr. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale}15/KW.4.3.36. Brake Squeaks on Bentley Cars. Sr/VA.1/ET.15.1.36. Sr/VA.5/ET.24.2.36. Some years ago we had an epidemic of brake squeaks, and the tipping shoe evolved by G.W.H. proved at that time to be a complete solution. We have again run into this trouble in spite of the tipping shoe, and the matter is receiving our attention. We know that floating dampers on the shoes can do some good, but have the demerit of complication and extra expense; we know that spring bands round weak drums and flexible shoes can each reduce squeaks. The way to make the most profound difference in the tendency of a brake to squeak is to change the type of lining. We know that M.R. is particularly bad for squeaks, and as F.B.A. is at any rate less bad in this respect, we think you had better obtain some small quantity of it in Bentley size to be used for relining in bad complaint cases at your discretion. It has of course passed its 10,000 miles tests and is used on R.R. cars. We hope to run a standardisation test shortly on S.5805 Ferodo. This material is a development of F.B.A. and is better than it. As soon as this is done we will advise depots to fit it in complaint cases. In the meantime we cannot improve on your suggestion in the case of chassis B-5-EJ (Embericos) of relining the brakes and fitting water excluders to keep out mud and water.
