TO HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}) FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} BM.) C. to BI. WOB. ORIGINAL R5/M24.6.27. X8420 X8570 FRONT AXLE CONTROL BY SHOCK DAMPER. I am agreed that this shall go ahead, but we have to make very decided modifications to the front exhaust pipe. E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} is sending you a design to try to send all the exhaust gases down the back pipe which will be increased in diameter. If we can do this it will clear up a very unsatisfactory corner, and actually be a saving on the work to be done. In the meantime I am anxious that the parts shall be prepared on the chassis for this control, the actual shock dampers to be held over until we have found whether we can render them accessible, or whether we shall have to change their form somewhat to make them accessible with the present piping. A sketch of the proposed piping is sent with this letter. If it can be rigged up temporarily, and is found to be free from reducing the power of the engine by back pressure, then we can quickly settle the whole of the parts for this modification.
