RE. CLEARANCE OF SILENCER AND BRAKE ROPES.

We find that without any load on the chassis the rear brake ropes invariably rub on the silencer.

According to the drawing it would appear that they should clear this by .325".

It is agreed that with load on the chassis they will not catch, but I contend that under rough road conditions, when on the rebound, the brake ropes will catch, thereby affecting the action of the brake.

There appears no alternative but to allow cars to go out in this condition. The point has, however, been brought to our attention by Coachbuilders, and I feel it should receive our consideration. Should you consider this point at fault and should be attended to, will you please let me have a copy of your instructions, so that we can attend to the cars now on test and delivered.

It is certainly a fact that on some cars the rope entirely clears vertically, whereas on others the rope overlaps vertically much more than specified on the drawing.
