Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Wst.20/JH. 24th September, 1936. Messrs. Rolls-Royce Limited, Derby. For the Attention of Mr. H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} West. Dear Mr. West, Replying to your letter of the 23rd instant, we have worked out what I think will be a satisfactory method of securing the screened extensions in place of the welding on the sample aero plugs which were previously submitted to you, and I hope to be able to resubmit these plugs to you embodying this revised method early next week. When I send these plugs to you, however, I shall ask you not to regard the screening extension arrangement as a design that we would be willing to put into production; it is an arrangement that has been made solely to test with screening the plugs we have already made, and so avoid delay in waiting for plugs out of our next firing batch. After you have tested the plugs which I hope to send you on Monday, I think it will be necessary for us to get together again on this screening question. With regard to the Bentley plugs, I notice that you suspect pre-ignition. I don't think there will be any difficulty in dealing with this aspect of the matter if your suspicions materialise, but I should like to know fairly definitely, because the cure for it would lie in the provision of insulators with shorter noses, which I am quite prepared to make up for you in our next firing batch. Have you had a Bentley running with the complete equipment of X399 plugs? Frankly, I should not have expected pre-ignition with X399. Awaiting your further news in due course, and pending the despatch of our further plugs to you, I remain, Yours faithfully, p.p. G.E.B. N.F. STOCKBRIDGE, Managing Director.
