In reply to your note re the above,
we have taken time to analyse the stresses in
these levers, and though the U section in
torsion is rather complicated, we think the
accompanying diagrams very closely represent
the relative stresses in the old and new type.
It will be seen that the stress reaches a peak,
in the old type where the fracture occurs.
The increased section in the new type gives a
reduction of stress of 36% and moves the weak
point further along the lever.

We have removed the leather packings
from the springs.
