re 40 mm. CANNON GUN.

With reference to your Memo. Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}11/KW.21.10.40. and confirming our telephone conversation today.

For reasons of policy, it seems to be undesirable that we should have any direct Contracts with the Admiralty, and therefore we are trying to recover the money spent on the prototype guns and mountings for the Navy, from the British United Shoe Machine Co. of Leicester and the L.M. & S. respectively.

This is not altogether a straightforward proposition but we shall know whether it is practicable within the next few weeks.

With regard to development work, this is at present being carried out on an Air Ministry Order Number because their gun and mounting for Aerodrome Defence will almost exactly suit the Power Boat Company of Southampton, who are the people interested in the power driven mounting.

At the moment, therefore, one lot of development work should do for two customers.

With Rb{R. Bowen}'s assistance, we believe we shall be able to ensure that Rolls Royce are not out of pocket due to their patriotic work on the Navy's behalf.
