Copy of Memo from Mr. Royce to Mr. Johnson, R2/P22714, re "A" & "B" type Steering for L to E type Cars.

With reference to the London to Edinburgh Chassis and 8 seater bodies, we shall have in the new chassis B & D steering only.

I agree that the London to Edinburgh Chassis with its high compression engine should not be used for enclosed bodies, and therefore when B steering is fitted, if for an enclosed body, the engine compression should be made normal.

As the type will now be the same as the Alpine Eagle, I do not know that there is any reason for preventing Continental Customers using this type for any purpose that they use the standard type for.

When, however, a body of any weight is to be fitted the truss rods must in all cases be fitted, and one does not really know where the difference comes in between the London to Edinburgh, our standard chassis and the AlpineEagle, except the slight change in the compression, so that when we get the universal bonnet and radiator upon the car, it seems as though all the cars would be alike. The only variation being that of removing some of the weight and increasing the compression in what is to be called the Alpine Eagle Pattern, so that the Alpine Eagle pattern is the chassis for light open sporting cars, and is always fitted with D steering, and practically all the other chassis are to be alike.

I should have thought that none of our bodies were long enough for an 8 seated body, and that such a body should wait at least until we get the new long chassis, but we still look upon even this as being suitable for six seats only, facing forwards.

R.{Sir Henry Royce}
