X4266 BY6/H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 29.9.24. H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 20 HP. PETROL TANK FILLER. -------------------------- 1. Referring to EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}1Q/H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 26.9.24. the question of the appearance of the type of filler cap we use on this car has already been referred to West WitteringHenry Royce's home town on more than one occasion. R.{Sir Henry Royce} does not see any reason for modifying the design of this part. 2. Re safety wire becoming rusty, the suggestion for a chain was the one originally proposed. As a matter of fact we supplied the Experimental Dept. with a number of chains of different types, but they finally decided in favour of the present stranded cable. Apparently the trouble with the chain was "rattling" as the chain necessarily hangs loose when the cap is in position on the tank. The present type of cable is being bought as a tinned stranded steel cable, and should not therefore exhibit signs of rusting in the manner indicated. I will look at the sample car referred to and see if there is anything peculiar about it. 3. In regard to the filler tube apparently corroding under the action of the petrol, we are arranging to carry out your suggestion of tinning the whole length of the tube internally and will treat any other fittings which project into the petrol tank in a similar manner.
