x7060 Exptl. Dept. HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Bmth.17/KW. 24th May, 1934. Messrs. George Salter & Co.Ltd., West Bromwich, BIRMINGHAM. Dear Sirs, Valve Springs. We have received from an American Firm of Motor Car Manufacturers particulars of the materials they use for valve springs. They have two steels which are as under :- No. 1. No. 2. Carbon 0.45 - 0.55 .60 - .70 Manganese 0.60 - 0.80 .60 - .80 Phosphorus 0.025 Max. .025 Max. Sulphur 0.025 Max. .025 Max. Silicon 0.15 - 0.30 - Chromium 0.80 - 1.10 - Vanadium 0.15 Min. - The heat treatments are :- No. 1. Heat to 1625ºF.{Mr Friese} Quench in oil. Temper at 780ºF.{Mr Friese} for 30 minutes. Cool in air. Straighten. Re-temper at 700ºF.{Mr Friese} for 30 minutes. Cool in air. No. 2. Heat to 1500ºF.{Mr Friese} Quench in oil. Temper at 680ºF.{Mr Friese} for 1 hour. Cool in air. Straighten. Re-temper at 600ºF.{Mr Friese} for 30 minutes. Cool in air. | ||
