87941 Es.4/MJ.22.6.32. To R.{Sir Henry Royce} From Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c. to Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} c. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Re. 19-EX. CAR. This car did not complete 10,000 miles test in France. It was brought back because some obvious improvements were required before continuing the test. Since the car has been back the following points have received attention :- (1) Synchro-Mesh Gearbox. The serrations for driving the third gear have been made similar to the scheme adopted on the 25 HP. to prevent the third speed working out. A modification has been made to prevent the failure of the change gear operating mechanism. It will be remembered that the taper pin sheared during the last test. (2) R.R.Semi Expanding Carburetter. This car is now fitted with the latest type carburetter having all the recent modifications. (3) Brake Drums. We are anxious to use cast iron drums cast in our own foundry. Previously this car was running with drums obtained from Messrs. Lake & Elliot. Our foundry have been working on the job and have produced drums which they think are equal to those we can buy outside. (4) Flexible Shackle. The first shackle we ran of this type was more or less a temporary design. This car is now fitted with a later design to M.Sch.3452, which is the type we wish to standardise. (5) Crankshaft Damper. We have received a number of complaints of fractured friction plates on the P.2 damper. This car is now fitted with a modified plate which should overcome this. (6) Petrol Pump. Modifications have been made to the petrol pump so that it will take up on the reserve in a much shorter time. | ||
