Mr Johnson

Ball Bearings.

With reference to your enquiry - Have we improved the ball races?

On May 23rd. in accordance with Mr Royce's instructions Mr Barrington prepared a Standing Order for the Repair Shop to the effect that all D.W.M. ball bearings (with sheet metal cages) were to be replaced with bearings having cast cages, - the alteration to be made as the cars come in for repairs or overhaul.

When this was submitted to Mr Royce for signature, Mr Royce gave instructions that this Standing Order was not to be issued but that we were to make sure that this type of bearing was the only one that was failing (see Mr Royce's memorandum R4/D29511 attached).

Mr Barrington replied to Mr Royce on June 1st. (TBB1/D1611), memorandum attached, but this memorandum was among a batch of papers returned to the Works
