COVENTRY.

Dear Mr. Wilks,

VALVE SPRINGS.

I find that I omitted to write to you about the valve spring which I took back with me after my last visit.

Our Laboratory inform me that in their opinion the wire is inferior to that supplied by the two firms, the names of which I gave you. It is partially decarborized so that there is a thin net work of ferite at the surface.

We have been running some of the Swedish wire springs, and though these do not appear to be as good as our chrome vanadium, are quite promising.

Re die casting of large aluminium parts, we have been going into this, and find from our small quantity on production there does seem to be a very definite improvement in quality and reduction in price, provided we can refrain from changing the design for 12 months.

I do not know whether you have seen the Austin Seven crankcase, but this appears to be a remarkable example of what can be done to-day in die casting.

We shall be interested to know whether your Profit and Loss account of the problem matches up with ours.

Yours sincerely,
