Fitting new big end bearing halves with AC.6 alum-tin bushes for a car.

With reference to your memo Sr/VA.4/HT.25.1.38, we have instructed for a set of bearing halves with AC.6 alum-tin bushes to be sent out to you in readiness for fitting to the above car. These are being sent with clearances assuming a normal shaft and blade rod as it is unlikely that any wear will have taken place on these parts. It may be that when you examine the big ends on this car that they will be in good condition, in which case it will not be necessary to change them, however, we shall be extremely interested in their condition, likewise the mainbearings as judged by the cap halves. We have asked for any information on points to watch with regard to fitting new bearing halves to old connecting rods, to be sent along to you by HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} So far as we can say, the main thing to see is that the bolt holes in the bearing half are in alignment with the rod bolts so that the bearing half beds down correctly to the cradle in the rod. Naturally some running in and gentle use should be given before subjecting the new bearings to "blinding", but with regard to looking at the bearings after 10 or 15,000 miles would say that everything being O.K. from the owners point of view, "leave well" alone until you carry out another R.20. Dept. and have had to transfer your order to the works. It is also recommended by HPS.{Horace Percy Smith - Experimental Factory Mgr} that complete rods are preferable to fitting new bearing halves to old rods. | ||
