Copy of letter from:- THOS. FIRTH & SONS LIMITED, Norfolk Works, Sheffield. Ref.- Steel Dept. JWF/AC. 13th Jan. 1923. Messrs. Rolls-Royce Limited, Nightingale Road, Derby. Dear Sirs, Laminated Road Springs for 40/50 H.P. Chassis. We are obliged by your letter of the 12th instant, Wd {Mr Wood / Mr Whitehead} 8/NJ12123, with regard to various outstanding points. With reference to your requirements as regards poundage, we admit these are very wide to your requirements, but we fully anticipated with a little more experience to get these well within your specification. We fully realise that the question of load is very important. We are pleased to note that the finish of the plates and the manner in which they bed is satisfactory. We are very sorry to hear that the eyes of the springs are not to your satisfaction both as regards alignment and size of hole, and as suggested by you, we are arranging for our Head Foreman, Mr. Briars, to pay you a visit on Tuesday afternoon next, if convenient to you. We may say that since the return of Mr. Briars and Mr. Stansfield on their last visit to your Works, we have decided to at once install a specially accurate drilling and reamering machine, to overcome these difficulties, as we feel that our present plant is hardly adaptable to working within the accuracies you wish. We are pleased to hear that the clips are satisfactory. We note that in your opinion the leaves are on the thick side, and we note that you fear squeaking. We should be pleased to hear the results of the bumping test in order to determine this point. With reference to the two sets of springs you propose to fit to experimental cars, we think it advisable for you to return these to us, and we will either alter the poundages or if we find we are unable to get the exact poundages you require, we will make two further sets of springs as quickly as possible.
