BY. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from R. {Sir Henry Royce} c. to RG. {Mr Rowledge} Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} E. {Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} X4111 R3/M31.12.27. RE. VALVE STEEL - FIRTH'S CHROME-NICKEL-TUNGSTEN. X.4111 X.4587 I am very pleased to hear of promising new valve steel. It sound like Staybright plus tungsten (roughly). Probably they have name or number. I certainly think we should make an extended trial if it promises well otherwise - i.e. good and reliable for forgings, and not too plastic, as I understand austenitic steels are liable to be. I fear any brittle steel, as Silchrome appears to be, occasionally may lead to disastrous breakdowns. R. {Sir Henry Royce} | ||
