X.3383 RE-HESS-BRIGHT BALL BEARINGS
X 3403 FOR PLANET WHEELS

The above bearings were sent to us from America by Mr. Olley. They are the deep groove type of bearing fitted with 8 balls and light steel cage. These bearings ran for 40 hours on a Eagle engine on the hanger. We inspected them after that time and found them to be in excellent condition. After 51 hours running we found on one bearing two of the balls had split in halves and several others badly pitted. The races- inner and outer - were also pitted. We replaced this damaged bearing with another of the same type. After a further 32 hours running we found another of these ball bearings smashed; it had gone in the same way as the first one. Two balls split in halves and the rest of the balls and races pitted. This second bearing had run a total of 83 hours. We understand that the ball bearings which will be supplied from America will be similar to the present Hoffmann we are using i.e. 10 balls and P.B. spigotted cage. This type of bearing we have tested we could not say it is suitable for our gear.
