Phantom III.

We wish to convert the present 1.25 engine speed dynamo and water pump to 1.5 engine speed for use on the "Continental" Phantom.

Will you please detail this scheme and adapt it to the Continental Phantom unit No.14 which you are going to produce.

For the initial experiment we think that this can be carried out on the existing crankcase in the following manner.

(1) Dynamo pinion will have 20 teeth instead of standard 24 teeth, reducing the pitch diameter from 2.920 to 2.430".

(2) Increase the pinion spindle mounting diameter on the crankcase by 2.920 - 2.430 = .490". Leaving the existing outer edge of the mounting diameter, the spindle will thus be moved in by .490", so that the smaller pinion meshes with the idler-gear.

(3) A 25/30 dynamo to be used which automatically lines itself up to the new centres, being .5" less diameter than the Phantom III dynamo. This requires an aluminium packing piece on the under side and can be screwed on to the existing dynamo mounting. The dynamo will need a new armature shaft suitable for driving the water pump.

(4) The water pump mounting will require machining back by .245" for the new centre. The pump outlet will just about stand machining for a further .245" in order to enter the gland.

The bottom gland retaining screw which at present comes on the underside of the pump outlet will have to be moved to an offset position.

This expt. gives a potential saving of £2.10.0d. cost and 5 lbs. weight.
