20HP. STEERING. X3430

Replying to HS{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}3/LG141027., R.{Sir Henry Royce} does not approve of the friction on the steering column, but since there is a car down here with friction available if desired, no doubt he will take the opportunity of verifying his conclusions. We do not think however that you can count on using this friction as a means of overcoming the present 20HP. geometry.

You will remember that we sent you a scheme for improving the 20HP. geometry some little while ago and it appears to us that as far as new cars are concerned it would be as easy to fit this improved geometry as it would be to supply a column with a friction attachment.

Perhaps you would let us know what the difficulties are as regards the improved geometry, and whether tests have been made tending to indicate that it is an improvement.
