- 21 - (1) Lancia Lambda suspension. A diagram is given shewing the arrangement of coil spring and hydraulic damper in the Lancia front suspension. Apart from the riding qualities, which are very excellent over bad roads at high speeds, the suspension has other merits. The chief of these are:- Absolute control of braking torque. Facilities for an excellent steering lock, the restrictions of frame and spring being removed. No front axle, considerable reduction in unsprung weight. An indication of the value of variable rating suspension can be gathered from the fact that the initial deflection of the R-R front springs is 2" while that of the Lancia is 7½". Full advantage is hardly taken of this low rating on the Lancia, however, because it is specifically designed for high speed work over very bad roads. (2) The Garson Suspension. Another method of using coil springs is exemplified in the 'Garson' suspension. This has never been proved out in practice like the Lancia and has a number of obvious disadvantages, not the least objectionable of which are the number of links and pins employed.
