Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} -3- contd:- I noted with interest your complaint of the jerk on the steering which we have established on 2-Goshawk-II and can be reduced by additional friction. We have only been able to achieve this, however, by tightening the ball end joints of the steering tube connections and it would appear that some more permanent friction is required The fibre washer is already being applied to both pivots. It was interesting to note that 5-Goshawk-II as a chassis, was very good in this respect but after the run to, and from London with the body fitted, the jerk in the steering was distinctly prevalent although not as bad as 2-Goshawk-II. Have you have any suggestion or scheme in hand for still further increasing the friction or is there any alternative suggestion for overcoming this trouble. We are arranging to fix an angle piece for the lubricators to the rear shock absorbers ball end joints. We also find a similar angle piece is required for the lubricator on the near-side bracket for the brake actuating shafts so as to clear the silencer exhaust pipe The oil leaks on 5-Goshawk-II did not seem very bad during our final test with the complete car. The most prevalent feature being the leak from the tappet doors. We hope this will now be less as we have now reduced the oil pressure on this car to nearly 20/25 lbs. We also had trouble on this car with the noisy oil pump which appeared to develop noisy and had to be replaced at the last minute. The question of obtaining quiet oil pumps, I am taking up with the works. contd:- | ||
