RE GOSHAWK II - FRONT AXLE.

We send herewith a print of "N" Sch: 752 shewing the proposed wire wheel front axle. The wire wheel is the same as that recently sent you for the rear wheels, and the design of the hub has been somewhat controlled by this front axle. The bearings, pivot, etc., are following Goshawk I, and the front axle itself is of the increased dimensions instructed, with the down-set suitable for the latest instructions on front springs.

We have modified the cross steering tube joint so as to give a split on one side only, but we intend to make a separate drawing of this joint. The angle on the cross steering lever of 15o is one which we found gave us the least steering error, and it also is the one which just enables us to get in the cross steering tube with this joint.

Regarding the bottom cap, we think it is just possible to take it on and off with the wheel in position.

The angles of 5º and 2½º for the pivot and stub axle respectively, are the same as the 40/50, and we have adopted them because they appear to come in the best on this axle, but it will be seen that we have made the pivot and the wheel meet at a point on the ground, instead of slightly offset as is the case at present.

But we understand that Mr Hives will shortly be reporting to you that there is more in vertical pivots and

Contd.
