8235. To Wor. {Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} From Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} /Rm. {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} c. to EJJ. Hs {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} /Rm. {William Robotham - Chief Engineer} 4/MJ.26.1.31. X.235. EJJ.File. HYDRAULIC SHOCK ABSORBERS. In view of the seriousness of the position with regard to these fittings we think that it is essential that we shall do some intensive endurance running on a rig that could be kept going night and day, as are our present tests on fabric couplings. All that is needed is a rig exactly similar to the one we are at present using in the Expl. Dept. for Research work with an alternating current motor substituted for present direct current variable speed motor. There is room for this rig in the Bump where we have the necessary electrical and water supplies. We particularly want the rig at present because we want to test out the existing shock absorbers with the loads they are using in America, to see if we can adopt these loads for the cars we are sending out to them without running into very serious trouble with complaints of noise. Additionally, we shall want to do many hundreds of hours on the new double piston damper before we can accept it as a solution to our complaints.
