R.R. 493A (50H) (D.B. 175 25-9-24) J.H.D. EXPERIMENTAL REPORT. -5- Expl. No. REF: HIC2/BE24.7.25. It appears that the water gets through the centre ring of serrations and then drains into the innards of the hubs. Propeller shaft. General condition fair. The fit of bushes on trunnion pieces very good. The bushes in the universal joint forks were very slack due to the holes being left rough on assembly which has resulted in them wearing quickly to the extent of .010 to .014 large. It will be necessary to fit new bushes on assembly. We have taken up the question of improving the machining of these forks with Mr. Willis to ensure that a good finish is given to the holes. Radiator. Radiator has been tested for water leak and found O.K. There is a slight wear in the shutter bearings. This wear is not excessive. General condition good. GEARBOX. The general condition of gearbox, servo mechanism etc. is quite good. We give below in detail the condition of the various units :- Gearbox & Clutch Operating Shaft (G.52254 & G.51601) General condition of gearbox good and all studs were tight. Clutch operating shaft a good fit in box with no apparent wear. 1st. & 3rd. Motion Shaft G.51569. The wear shown on the shaft was negligible. On all the gears including the servo drive worm gear there were indicative signs of even bedding on teeth with the exception of the 4th. sliding gear which showed slight signs of wear on lead of teeth. 2nd. Motion shaft G.52179. The 2nd. motion shaft machined to EX.485 (60º splines) was in perfect condition. Splines on shaft and in gear O.K. as were the teeth of gears and Acme thread. Reverse gear G.52118. No apparent wear on splines of shaft. Even bedding of teeth of gears. When under load the reverse pinion showed slight cross bedding. Acme thread O.K. Speedometer drive G.52270. Both gears to gether with the square speedometer contd :- | ||
